Al and Ray's Excellent Adventure: The Highlights Reel #4

Highlight Reel #4: Border Patrol, Bumper Cars, and Good Friends

The drive from Calgary to Minot, North Dakota, was interesting, at one point, there was a lot of snow on the ground, and at another, there was more of it. It was odd that it was only in these two places.

Crossing the border wasn’t quite the warm Canadian hug I’d hoped for.

 “What’s in your luggage?”

“What’s in your trunk?”

“Open your trunk!”

“Got any marijuana, cannabis, THC, CBD, alphabet soup?”

“Any alcohol? Tobacco? Fruit? Meat? Uncooked meat?”

Apparently, smuggling a raw brisket into North Dakota is frowned upon. But no detainment, no cavity search, just a mild grilling (pun intended). Chalk it up as a win. 😎

Minnesota: Poker, Prayer, and Fender Benders

I made it to Minnesota and caught up with my good friend Dale. First, we mingled with some spiritual folks, then we played some Texas Hold'em. Because nothing says enlightenment like praying and bluffing.

That night, we grabbed a late dinner and caught up, it's always good to reconnect with a longtime friend.

The next morning, Dale took me to his private club, he's been a member for over 52 years. That’s right, he’s been a member longer than some trees have been alive. The building itself has been around since 1942.

After that, I visited the St. Paul Cathedral. It was serene, beautiful, and very grand, but if I’m being honest, it’s no St. Louis Cathedral. That one set the holy bar so high, St. Paul might need a divine step stool.

On my way to Minnehaha Falls, a woman pulled out of a Walgreens parking lot, cross two lanes of traffic, slid into the left lane, and then decided the right lane (where I was driving straight) looked cozy. “Everyone else let me through,” she insisted.

Yeah… except me. The cop heard both sides. Her damage was on the front. Mine? Starts after the front tire where she hit me.

Deer: 1

Crazy Lady: 1

Al’s Cars: 0

Later that night, Dale and I hit up Mystic Lake Casino. I played roulette: up, down, sideways, like the stock market in Vegas. Ended the night just $15 down, not losing hardly any money in a casino is definitely a win!

The next day, I dropped off my damaged car at the airport, picked up a new one, and headed to Kentucky. The drive itself was uneventful. The most notable moments were a massive Jesus-sized cross on the horizon and a sky that tried briefly to impress me at sunset.

I worked very hard not to hit any deer, although I saw plenty of them lurking by the roadside, looking suspicious. I tucked in behind a tractor trailer like I was drafting in NASCAR and let it pull me all the way to my hotel.

From Paducah, I drove to Ringgold, Georgia, to visit my good friends Kim and Phillip. I’ve really missed these two and had such a great time catching up.

We had a couple of really great lunches, and a couple of good dinners.

Phillip and I watched the MLB All-Star Game (Philip was almost up till midnight!) , went to Lookout Point, Rock City, Point Park, and Ruby Falls. We got to see some really beautiful views. Ruby falls, was very interesting, especially the story behind it, but...

It was also great seeing Sophie, Fergie, and Maisie, the four-legged family members. Fergie was normally hanging with Kim or barking at me. 😎

I got a big kick how we kept going between Georgia and Tennessee multiple times in a day, even in a trip we would go to Tennessee back to Georgia then the Tennessee again.

After spelunking at Ruby Falls, Phillip and I headed to Main Street Meats, a place recommended by our good friend Gene, who used to live in the Georgia mountains and apparently knows where all the best burger joints! It really was an amazing burger, grilled to perfection.

The last night, we had a great dinner which was top-tier comfort food, courtesy of Kim, who really outdid hersel, pulled pork, perfectly cooked broccoli, and homemade mac and cheese that could win awards.

I’ve really enjoyed my time with Kim and Phillip. It’s been a fun and meaningful visit. I’ve missed them so much since they left Tallahassee, and spending this time together reminded me just how special they are. Being with good friends like that is hard to beat.

After spending some quality time with Phillip and Kim (and Fergie barking at me with love), I hit the road, right into the joyful chaos that is Atlanta traffic. But eventually... home sweet home!

Well, sort of.

Because now, after a week at work, I’m flying out to Coeur d'Alene, Idaho to pick up my car and drive it back across the country. This is the final bookend of my epic journey.

Will the return trip be interesting? Who knows. Maybe I’ll write daily updates. Maybe I’ll just sum it all up at the end with, “It was long. I drove. The end.”

This time, I’m taking a different route back, but no time for sightseeing, no detours, no side quests. Just me, the road, and a mission: get back to work. Because as much as I’d love another adventure, the paycheck calls. 😎

Day 30: Al’s Excellent Adventure – Vancouver and Beyond

Day 30: Al’s Excellent Adventure – The Final Episode!

This morning, I said goodbye to Kim and Phillip. I already miss them, and not just because they kept feeding me. Spending quality time with them was the perfect pit stop for the soul.

After leaving, I stopped for gas, because road trips run on caffeine and unleaded. Then, of course, I crossed back into Tennessee... and moments later, back into Georgia. My watch? Totally confused. It gave up entirely and decided it now lives in Central Time, permanently.

I got home, tried to reason with it. No luck. So I pulled the classic IT move, cold booted my phone and watch, reconnected my watch, and voilà! Back to Eastern Time, baby.

Honestly, the most dramatic part of this whole 9,000-mile adventure might’ve been convincing my watch we weren't stuck in Kentucky.

Now, let’s talk about the drive. On Day 1, it took me 5.5 hours to make this drive. Today? 7 hours and 35 minutes. Why? Because Atlanta traffic is a vortex of despair where time goes to die. I spent more time parked on I-75 than I did sightseeing in some cities.

But…I MADE IT HOME! 🏠 🎉🎊 😎

Naturally, I did what any exhausted traveler would do after 30 days and 9,000+ miles on the road: I went out to dinner with friends. (Shoutout to Dao, because nothing says "Welcome back to real life" like drowning in miso soup.)

Then I came home, unpacked (well, opened my suitcase and stared at it), and now I’m wired like I just had three espressos—but I know I need sleep. My body says nap; my brain says “Let’s scroll Instagram and Facebook until 3am.”

Sure you are. Just like your watch really thought it was in Central Time. 😎

But seriously, after 30 days, 9,000 miles, mystery time zones, and noodle-fueled reunions. I'm thinking, the GPS should take some credit for this trip. 😎

Now I need to go to bed before I start planning my next trip in my dreams. 🛌✨

Coming soon: the highlight reel of this crazy, unforgettable, GPS-defying journey. Honestly, at this point, I feel like I should get a medal... or at least a free oil change.

Day 28: Al's Excellent Adventure, Vancouver and Beyond

Day 29 (Oops, Not 28): Al’s Excellent Adventure – Underground Falls and Over the Top Lunch

So I finally figured out why my trip timeline was off, I skipped the day in Kansas when the Eisenhower Library was closed. Apparently, if history takes a holiday, so do I. So let's correct that: today is Day 29.

We kicked off the day at Ruby Falls, which is not a fancy shampoo brand but a 145-foot underground waterfall located 1,120 feet beneath Lookout Mountain. Yep, we went down into the Earth to look at water falling down. It’s the deepest commercial waterfall in the U.S., which sounds like something you say when a mountain has a midlife crisis and starts trying to impress tourists.

Again, we did the Georgia, Tennessee, Georgia shuffle.

After spelunking and soaking up some damp beauty, Phillip and I headed to Main Street Meats, a place recommended by our good friend Gene, who used to live in the Georgia mountains and apparently knows where all the best burger joints!

The service at Main Street Meats? Next level.
Our water glasses never dipped below half full.  I think they had some kind of water ninja working the floor. The waitress was friendly, professional, and somehow always appeared right as we were thinking about asking for something. Mind reader? Possibly.

Everyone on staff seemed to be on a mission to make sure no one left even slightly unsatisfied. They were gliding around the restaurant like hospitality hawks, spotting empty plates and refilling needs before you even raised a finger.

Honestly, this wasn’t just a dining experience...
It was a divine dining experience.
I left full, happy, and slightly in love with the service staff.

This place didn’t disappoint. In fact, I might still be dreaming about that burger. It was juicy, smoky, and may have whispered compliments to me mid-bite. The fries were basically gourmet potato chips, thick-sliced, and grilled to perfection.  Wow!
And then came the desserts. Oh, the desserts. They offered:
Blueberry pie (tempting)
Chocolate gelato (Phillip’s choice — he looked like he’d found inner peace)
And what I went for: a frozen banana pudding ice cream sandwich.

Now, I was expecting something wrapped in chocolate, like a giant Klondike bar’s southern cousin. But no — this glorious creation was sandwiched between two slabs of cake. It wasn’t what I imagined, but wow, it was good. It tasted like your grandma’s banana pudding got a fancy food truck and went viral on TikTok.

Main Street Meats, I will be back. Probably wearing stretchy pants.

Tonight’s dinner was top-tier comfort food, courtesy of Kim, who really outdid hersel,  pulled pork, perfectly cooked broccoli, and homemade mac and cheese that could win awards.

I’ve really enjoyed my time with Kim and Phillip. It’s been a fun and meaningful visit. I’ve missed them so much since they left Tallahassee, and spending this time together reminded me just how special they are. Being with good friends like that is hard to beat.

As the curtain begins to close on this leg of the adventure, I’m getting ready to head home tomorrow. It’ll be good to see my Tallahassee friends again, I've been gone too long

But no rest for the wicked: Saturday is jam-packed with coffee at 9 a.m. with a coffee group, lunch with friends at noon, and then a birthday bash for a couple of adults refusing to let go of their 40s. Should be a blast.

Oh — and in car news: I got word today that my vehicle might be ready Monday. Or not. Or maybe. Apparently, it’ll be ready when it’s ready. So...we wait.

The Car Transport - Day 1

Day 1 of the Car Transport : Mountains, Deer, and Dessert Disappointment Today I picked up my car in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho , and let me tell ...
